Ronald Scott Helms, age 72, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Jefferson Healthcare Center. The son of Paul Benjamin Helms and Jo Ann (Bard) Helms, Ron was born on Oct. 11, 1943, in Wayne County, Mich. Raised in Indiana, Ron spent his early adulthood in Pensacola, Fla., had brief stays in New Castle, Pa. and Maumee, Ohio, then found himself in Ashtabula, Ohio. Ron graduated from Kent State University with an Associate’s degree in Computer Science in 1992. While he was a student, he was very involved in the computer club. After graduating, he worked as an IT for the campus computer lab. He also worked many years for Singer Sewing Machine Company. Between sewing machines, computers, and everything else, he could fix just about any problem. When he wasn't tinkering, he was always up for a road trip. He loved to take off and drove across the country many times to visit family in California, making the trip solo on one occasion. For many years, he attended Friends Temple of Spiritual Truth in Ashtabula, both serving as President on the board and speaking to the congregation during services. Ron will be remembered for his simplicity in everyday life. He found enjoyment in just about anything he did, even just drinking coffee and talking with friends at the local laundromat. He leaves behind three sons, Chad, Ryan and Scott Helms; two daughters, Paula Helms Cobb and Phyllis Helms; sister, Judith Ann Saraceni; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Steven Helms.
